Gregor the Overlander is a book for ages 9-14 or so. He is an 11 year old boy who lives in New York with his mother, grandmother (Dad's mom), and two sisters. His Dad went missing about two years ago without any clues as to where or why. They are just eking by with his mother working and Gregor trying to be the young man of the family.
On a summer day he and his two year old sister fall down a vent in their apartment complex laundry room. After falling for what seemed like forever they end up in the Underland. Meeting huge bugs and giant rats and people who ride bats is only the beginning of the strange things in the Underland.
I am not finished with book one (there are several in the series) but like how the story is building. He is searching for his lost dad (I wont tell you where they think he might be ). I love how the author brings out the deep desire the boy has to have a father figure in his life and how he wants to create memories with him.
I also enjoy his little sister. She is a go-getter and as cute as a button all at the same time. Gregor is very protective of her and you can tell he loves her deeply.
The author made the characters very believable and added just the right amount of little details to make it seem more real to the reader.
So far I am enjoying it. I will update at the end of the book.
